Vol. III — Jade & Bradley

Black Tie Wedding at Ash Barton Estate in North Devon

Ash Barton Estate is a beautiful wedding venue surrounded by the open North Devon countryside. From above, it’s an incredible location — the kind of place where drone shots really show the scale and atmosphere of the setting.

Jade and Bradley had planned their day perfectly. Every detail was considered — from the style to the timeline — and everything was running smoothly. The one thing you can never fully control on a wedding day is the weather, and on this day it changed quickly.

As a wedding photographer I’m always prepared for this. I always have a plan B and a plan C, especially when the weather shifts unexpectedly. The challenge is adapting while still keeping the elegance and atmosphere of the photographs.

Part I — A Stylish Start to the Day

When I arrived, Bradley and the groomsmen were already suited in classic black tie and looked incredibly sharp. Jade was getting ready in the main house with the bridesmaids, where the atmosphere was relaxed but full of anticipation.

Because parts of the venue were quite dark and the sky was heavily overcast, I didn’t want to rely on heavy flash. Instead I used subtle lighting to maintain a natural look while gently lifting the darker areas of the room.

With the groomsmen, I decided to take them into the pool room. The large pool table and darker surroundings immediately gave me an idea — a black and white series inspired by old New York bars. The styling of the guys worked perfectly with this idea, and the shots came together exactly as I’d imagined.

Part II — Bridal Preparations in the Main House

When I returned to Jade and the girls, the light was very flat due to the weather outside. I added a small amount of lighting just to give the images a little pop while keeping everything natural and elegant.

There’s always a balance when working indoors — especially in venues where natural light is limited. My aim is never to make the lighting look artificial, but simply to enhance the scene enough to keep the atmosphere intact.

Part III — When the Weather Changes the Plan

Originally the ceremony was planned to take place outside. But as the weather continued to turn, the decision was made at the last minute to move everything inside one of the barns.

This meant adjusting quickly.

I ran a few quick test shots to dial in the lighting before guests arrived. Indoor ceremonies can be technically challenging without natural light, but preparation makes a huge difference.

Once everything was ready, I returned to capture Jade getting ready and the beautiful first look with her dad. It was a really special moment and one of those genuine interactions that always feels powerful to photograph.

Part IV — The Ceremony Inside the Barn

As guests gathered inside the barn, the atmosphere shifted into something more intimate.

Jade’s bridesmaids walked across the courtyard before being joined by Jade and her father. I captured a mix of close-ups, wider frames and small details to give a full sense of the setting before the ceremony began.

Because I had already tested my settings, I could focus entirely on the moment itself — moving between wider shots of the ceremony and tighter frames that captured the emotion between Jade and Bradley.

Part V — Portraits Between the Rain

After the ceremony and confetti, the weather was still unpredictable.

I told Jade and Bradley that if they were happy to step outside for a few minutes, we could move quickly between a few locations I had scouted earlier in the morning.

They were brilliant about it.

Even with the challenging weather, we managed to capture some beautiful portraits around the grounds. I used a selection of lenses to create soft, elegant frames that still felt natural to the setting.

Considering the conditions, I was incredibly happy with how these images turned out.

A Day That Adapted Beautifully

Weddings rarely go exactly to plan, but sometimes the unexpected changes create moments that feel even more authentic.

Jade and Bradley’s wedding at Ash Barton Estate was one of those days — stylish, relaxed and full of genuine moments despite the shifting weather.

And in the end, those are always the stories that make the most meaningful photographs.
